A Big Honor for Our School Board
CKSD School Board Named a “2025 Board of Distinction”
Posted on 12/04/2025
We are proud to share that our school board has been recognized as a 2025 Board of Distinction by the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA)!

This honor is given to school boards that demonstrate effective governance and a measurable commitment to improving student outcomes. In announcing its selections, WSSDA highlighted our board’s “strategic removal of barriers to student participation” and the alignment between the board’s decisions and their impact on the learning experience of students.

Measurable Results

Over the past several years, our board has taken intentional action to identify and close opportunity gaps across the district. Examples include:
  • Expanding access to STEM and hands-on learning in elementary schools through Engineering is Elementary, DoDEA grant initiatives, and new districtwide science kits.
  • Broadening access to dual-credit programs at the secondary level. Dual credit enrollment has grown from 150 to 595 students over four years!
  • Removing financial barriers by eliminating athletic participation fees. This resulted in a more than 60% increase in sports participation.
  • Investing in accessible and inclusive facilities, from upgrading playgrounds at elementary schools to enhancing athletic and activity spaces at our secondary schools.
These efforts reflect the board’s commitment to our vision that every student will find their passion and achieve their dreams.

Stronger Outcomes for Students

The board’s direction and decisions, supported by the work of our district leaders and staff, have contributed to student success across the district. In 2024, the culmination of this work led to our highest graduation rate in 20 years. And at our alternative learning experience (ALE) high school (Barker Creek Community School), graduation grew from 59.3% in 2018 to 79% in 2024. Stronger pathways, more dual-credit options, targeted supports, and increased extracurricular participation have all played a role.

Your Support Makes a Difference

This award reflects the collective effort of our board, superintendent, district leadership, staff, students, and community. We are grateful for everyone who contributes to making CK Schools such a special place. Thank you!
